چکیده

We present exact calculations of flow polynomials F (G, q) for lattice strips of various fixed widths Ly and arbitrarily great lengths Lx, with several different boundary conditions. Square, honeycomb, and triangular lattice strips are considered. We introduce the notion of flows per face fl in the infinite-length limit. We study the zeros of F (G, q) in the complex q plane and determine exactly the asymptotic accumulation sets of these zeros B in the infinite-length limit for the various families of strips. The function fl is nonanalytic on this locus. The loci are found to be noncompact for many strip graphs with periodic (or twisted periodic) longitudinal boundary conditions, and compact for strips with free longitudinal boundary conditions. We also find the interesting feature that, aside from the trivial case Ly = 1, the maximal point, qcf , where B crosses the real axis, is universal on cyclic and Möbius strips of the square lattice for all widths for which we have calculated it and is equal to the asymptotic value qcf = 3 for the infinite square lattice. email: [email protected] email: [email protected]. Dedicated to F. Y. Wu on his 70’th Birthday

Orientations, Lattice Polytopes, and Group Arrangements II: Modular and Integral Flow Polynomials of Graphs

We study modular and integral flow polynomials of graphs by means of subgroup arrangements and lattice polytopes. We introduce an Eulerian equivalence relation on orientations, flow arrangements, and flow polytopes; and we apply the theory of Ehrhart polynomials to obtain properties of modular and integral flow polynomials. The emphasis is on the geometrical treatment through subgroup arrangeme...

Reliability Polynomials and their Asymptotic Limits for Families of Graphs

We present exact calculations of reliability polynomials R(G, p) for lattice stripsG of fixed widths Ly ≤ 4 and arbitrarily great length Lx with various boundary conditions. We introduce the notion of a reliability per vertex, r({G}, p) = lim|V |→∞R(G, p)1/|V | where |V | denotes the number of vertices in G and {G} denotes the formal limit lim|V |→∞G. We calculate this exactly for various famil...

Tutte Polynomials and Related Asymptotic Limiting Functions for Recursive Families of Graphs

We prove several theorems concerning Tutte polynomials T (G, x, y) for recursive families of graphs. In addition to its interest in mathematics, the Tutte polynomial is equivalent to an important function in statistical physics, the Potts model partition function of the q-state Potts model, Z(G, q, v), where v is a temperature-dependent variable. We determine the structure of the Tutte polynomi...

Potts Model Partition Functions for Self-Dual Families of Strip Graphs

We consider the q-state Potts model on families of self-dual strip graphs GD of the square lattice of width Ly and arbitrarily great length Lx, with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The general partition function Z and the T = 0 antiferromagnetic special case P (chromatic polynomial) have the respective forms NF,Ly,λ j=1 cF,Ly,j(λF,Ly,j) Lx , with F = Z, P . For arbitrary Ly, we deter...

Combinatorics of Dispersionless Integrable Systems and Universality in Random Matrix Theory

It is well-known that the partition function of the unitary ensembles of random matrices is given by a τ -function of the Toda lattice hierarchy and those of the orthogonal and symplectic ensembles are τ -functions of the Pfaff lattice hierarchy. In these cases the asymptotic expansions of the free energies given by the logarithm of the partition functions lead to the dispersionless (i.e. conti...
